Where it comes from

Our story of Ethlyn

Ether has been demoted twice. For the Greeks it was the fifth element, the pure upper air the gods breathed, above the ordinary atmosphere. Medieval and early modern physics kept it as the substance filling the heavens. Then in the nineteenth century it became the luminiferous ether — the medium light waves were assumed to travel through, since waves need something to wave in — and physicists spent decades trying to detect the earth's motion through it. The Michelson-Morley experiment failed to find any, repeatedly and with increasing precision, and relativity eventually explained why there was nothing to find. Meanwhile chemists had given the same name to a volatile liquid, which became the first general anaesthetic. So one word named a divine substance, then a hypothetical one, then a bottle in an operating theater.

The front is a shortening of the Old English element meaning noble, which Victorian antiquarians revived as a name in its own right. The ending is a free American element with no content. Nothing records what a family meant by the combination.

Fashion outlook

Ethlyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
What to consider
  • Ethelyn, Ethlynn and Ethel will all be written for it.
  • It reads as belonging firmly to the turn of the last century.
  • Neither half carries a meaning in this combination.
