Our story of Ethaniel
The -el ending is the most productive name-forming element in the Hebrew Bible: Michael, Daniel, Gabriel, Samuel, Nathaniel, Israel, Ariel, Azriel, Joel. Every one of them is a short statement with God as subject or object, and the pattern was still generating new names in the biblical period itself. What modern American naming has done is take the ending and apply it to fronts that are not Hebrew clauses — Ethaniel, Kaiel, Jaeliel. Structurally that is the same operation Hebrew performed for a thousand years; the difference is that the front no longer says anything. It is worth noting without disapproval: the element is genuinely ancient, the method is genuinely ancient, and the fact that the resulting name is not attested does not make the construction alien to the tradition it borrows from.

'firm, enduring' joined to the -iel ending
Hebrew Eitan means firm, steadfast, enduring or perennial — it is used of a river that does not dry up. That is a settled etymology and it belongs to the front. The -iel ending is the Hebrew el, 'God', which appears in Nathaniel, Daniel, Gabriel and dozens more, but here it is borrowed as a suffix rather than as part of a documented compound. The blend is modern and American and not attested in Hebrew.

The Tennyson test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ethaniel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tennyson climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tennyson's path sketches the road Ethaniel is walking now.
