Estephanie
Feminine · “crown”
Spanish cannot begin a word with an s followed by another consonant. It always puts an e in front — which is why school is escuela, Spain is España and star is estrella. Estephanie is that rule applied to an English name: Stephanie with the vowel Spanish requires, and the English spelling kept otherwise. It is half of each language, and the seam is the first letter.

The story of Estephanie
Estefanía has been a Spanish women's name for a very long time, carried by queens of Navarre and Castile in the Middle Ages, and it is entirely standard across Latin America. Stephanie became an extremely popular American name in the second half of the twentieth century. When those two facts meet in one household, this spelling is what comes out: the initial e is not decoration but a requirement of Spanish phonology, and the ph and the -ie are the English name's own. American records show it concentrated in Texas and rising through the 1990s.
Meaning
crown, wreath
From the Greek stephanos, the wreath given to the winner of a contest rather than a metal crown. The Spanish form of this name is Estefanía, with the accent that Spanish spelling requires; this version keeps the Spanish opening and the English ending, which is why it looks like neither.

Pronouncing Estephanie
es-teh-fah-NEE
Four syllables. Spanish puts the weight at the back and says the ph as an f, since Spanish has no ph. American speakers usually say es-TEF-uh-nee, following the English name with an extra syllable in front. Both are current in the households that use it.

The Verlinda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Estephanie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Verlinda climbed just as high around 1958, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Verlinda's path sketches the road Estephanie is walking now.

The trade-off
- It works in Spanish and in English without changing a letter, which the accented Spanish spelling does not.
- Steph and Estefy are both available, one for each language.
- The meaning is a single concrete image and takes one sentence to give.
- The name behind it is recognized across every European language.
- Ten letters and four syllables is a great deal of name, and forms will feel it.
- Estefania, Stephanie and Estephany all compete, so the spelling has to be dictated.
- It reads as a mistake to people who know only one of the two languages involved, in both directions.
