Estefana
Feminine · “a crown or garland”
Spanish cannot begin a word with an s followed by another consonant. It has not been able to since Latin turned into Spanish, which is why the country is España and the school is escuela — and why Stephen, arriving from Greek by way of Latin, had to grow an e at the front to get into the language at all.

The story of Estefana
The change happened in late Latin and it happened across the whole western half of the empire. French did it too and then dropped the s — which is why the French for school is ecole, with an accent marking the missing letter, and why every French word with that accent is a fossil of a lost s: hospital became hopital, forest became foret, island became ile. Spanish kept the s and the e together. Two languages, one sound change, two different solutions, both of them visible in every sentence.
Meaning
a crown or garland
The Greek word behind Stephen means a wreath of the kind given to victors, and the name belonged to the first Christian martyr. The extra vowel at the front of the Spanish form is not decoration: it is a repair. Spanish speakers physically cannot produce the initial cluster without it, which is why Spanish-speaking learners of English say estudy and espeak, and why every Latin word beginning that way has an e in front of it in Spanish.
How the name formed
- a Greek word for a victor's wreath
- the first Christian martyr carries it as a name
- Spanish adds a vowel to make the cluster sayable
- Estefania and Estefana in Spanish use
- appears in American records from the 1880s

Four syllables with the weight on the third. English readers tend to drop the first syllable entirely and produce Stephana, which undoes the repair the name was built around.
