Where it comes from

The story of Esperansa

In 1887 Ludwik Zamenhof, an eye doctor in Warsaw, published the first book of his international language under the name Doktoro Esperanto, which in the new language meant a person who hopes; his readers soon called the language itself Esperanto. The spelling Esperansa has a precedent of its own. Ladino, the Spanish carried by the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 and spoken for centuries around the eastern Mediterranean, writes hope as esperansa, letter for letter, because its spelling follows the sound.

Meaning

Esperanza is the ordinary Spanish noun for hope, from the Latin verb sperare, to hope. Esperansa is the same word with an s where standard Spanish spelling keeps a z.

Esperansa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 20 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Esperansa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A plain Spanish word with a plain meaning, hope, that every Spanish speaker knows.
  • The spelling matches how the name is said across the Americas.
  • Espe is a ready, established short form.
What to consider
  • Spanish speakers will see a respelling of Esperanza and may correct it, since the z spelling is the one most documents carry.
  • It is four syllables with the stress on the third, and English speakers will need to hear it once.
