The story of Esequiel
Ezekiel was a priest deported to Babylon in 597 BC and prophesied there; his book contains the vision of the wheels within wheels, the valley of dry bones and an enormously detailed description of a temple that was never built. It is among the strangest texts in the Hebrew Bible. Spanish naming took up the prophets more thoroughly than English did, and Ezequiel is ordinary in Mexico, Argentina and Spain. The s spelling is a Latin American variant, since seseo — the merger of s and z — makes the two letters interchangeable in speech throughout the Americas.

Hebrew Yehezqel joins a form of the verb hazaq, 'to be strong, to strengthen', to el, 'God'. The name can be read as a statement — God strengthens — or as a wish, may God strengthen. Both readings are standard and the difference is grammatical rather than substantial.
