The story of Eryka
The heathers are one of the great botanical concentrations on earth. Most of the eight hundred or so species grow in the Cape region of South Africa, in a strip of shrubland smaller than Ireland that holds more plant species than the whole of Europe, and a great many of them grow nowhere else and are pollinated by a single kind of bird or insect. Europe has about twenty. The genus was named after the classical word for the northern kind, by botanists who had not yet seen the southern ones, which is a common pattern: the name goes to what Europe knew first, and the actual center of diversity turns out to be somewhere nobody had looked.
Meaningscholars disagree
Sole ruler, or heather
As a feminine of Eric the Norse elements mean something like ever-ruler or sole ruler. As the Latin word the name is a plant. Both readings are in circulation, both are legitimate, and the record does not distinguish them; the y and the k in this spelling belong to neither.

Three syllables with the stress at the front. The y writes a short i, which is what y has always done in English, and the k writes the sound the c would have anyway before an a.

Fashion outlook
Eryka sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is established across German, Swedish and Italian use.
- Three short forms in three registers, all easy to say.
- The k removes any ambiguity from the middle of the name.
- Erica and Erika are both far commoner, so spelling it out is permanent.
- Neither the y nor the k changes a sound, so the spelling cannot be defended in speech.
- Two possible origins means two possible meanings and no way to choose.
