The story of Eryk
Erik Thorvaldsson was outlawed from Iceland for killing, sailed west, and spent three years exploring the land he found before returning to recruit settlers. The Saga of Erik the Red is explicit about the name: he called it Greenland because men would be readier to go there if it had an attractive name. Twenty-five ships set out and fourteen arrived, and the colony lasted about five hundred years before dying out. His son Leif reached North America around the year 1000. The name itself is a Norse compound about sole rule, and it has been carried by kings of Denmark, Norway and Sweden ever since. The Eryk spelling is the ordinary Polish one, so an American Eryk may be a respelling or a standard foreign form.

About 1 boy in 635 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Eryk itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Eryk's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Imari climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Imari's path sketches the road Eryk is walking now.
Eryk sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
