The story of Ernie
Britain's Premium Bonds do not pay interest; they enter every bond in a monthly draw, and the draw has always been made by a machine with this name, built as an acronym for a description of what it does. The first one came out of the post office research station and was designed by engineers who had worked on wartime code-breaking machinery. The problem they had to solve is harder than it sounds: a computer cannot produce genuinely random numbers, only predictable sequences that look random, and a national draw has to be unpredictable in a way that will survive inspection. So the machine does not compute at all. It measures physical noise — originally the flicker of current in a gas discharge tube, later thermal noise in transistors — and converts it into digits. The output is checked by an independent examiner every month, and the machine has been rebuilt several times, each version faster than the last.
Meaning
vigor, earnestness, a hard struggle
The formal name it shortens comes from an Old High German noun meaning seriousness in the sense of a fight rather than a mood. It serves the women's form of that name as well, which the record holds alongside it, and a bearer registered with the short form alone leaves no trace of which.

Fashion outlook
Ernie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm, short and understood immediately by anyone who hears it.
- The formal name stands behind it for occasions that want one.
- Every letter does what English expects, so it survives being heard once.
- It reads as a nickname even when it is the registered name, and people will ask what it stands for.
- It is strongly associated with one mid-century generation.
- The record holds it for daughters too, so it does not signal a sex on its own.
