Where it comes from

The story of Erman

The Irminsul was a wooden pillar in Saxony, and the Frankish annals record Charlemagne cutting it down and taking the treasure around it at the start of the Saxon wars. What it actually was is not known: a tree trunk, a column, possibly understood as holding up the sky. Its name contains the same element that stands at the front of a group of Germanic personal names, which is why the destruction reads as an attack on a whole vocabulary as much as on an object. The Saxon wars went on for a generation and included forced baptisms and a mass execution, and the conversion they produced was the kind that follows an army. Nineteenth-century German nationalism later took the pillar up as a symbol, which is its own story.

Meaningscholars disagree

whole or universal

The element is usually read as whole, great or universal, and it stands in a set of old Germanic names. Some scholars connect it instead to a god's name. The two readings cannot be separated and the element is very old.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. German would give the first vowel a clearer quality and tap the r, which American English does not.

Fashion outlook

Erman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • Five letters with no silent ones make it quick to write.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
What to consider
  • Herman, Ermin and Erman will all be confused in writing.
  • It is frequently taken for Herman with the h dropped.
  • The element's meaning is argued over and has two readings.
