Erline

Feminine · “from the title earl”

rare

Erline is built on a rank rather than on a name, which is unusual and worth noticing. Earl is the only English noble title that English actually made; every other one in the peerage was imported. And the language never produced a feminine for it, which is why the wife of an earl is a countess, borrowed from the very system the title was supposed to resist.

Where it comes from

The story of Erline

The English kept their own word for the rank and lost the argument about everything else. When the Normans arrived they brought a complete continental hierarchy, and English absorbed duke, marquess, viscount and baron wholesale from French. Earl survived because it was already there and already meant the right thing. But there was no English feminine of it, and there was no way to make one that sounded like anything, so the wife of an earl became a countess, from the French word for the rank English had declined to adopt. The result is the only title in the peerage where the man's word and the woman's word come from different languages, and it has been that way for nine hundred years. This name is a much later attempt at the same problem, made by American families rather than by heralds, and it solves it the American way, by adding an ending that looks French and asking no further questions.

Meaningscholars disagree

from the title earl

The likeliest source is the English word for the rank, which came from an Old Norse word for a chieftain and was already in use before the conquest. Built into a woman's name with a French-looking ending, it means roughly of the earl or in the manner of an earl, which is a thing to describe rather than a thing to translate. A minority of families may have intended a shortening of a longer name instead, and the spelling cannot rule that out.

How the name formed

  1. A Norse word for a chieftain, taken into Old English
  2. Earl surviving the Norman hierarchy
  3. Earl as an American first name for boys
  4. Erline and Earline built from it for daughters

er-LEEN

Two syllables with the stress at the back and the ending said as een. Earline is the same name spelled to make the connection to the word visible, and the two are identical in speech.

Erline sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 66 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Erline sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, clear and completely unambiguous once heard, which many names of its period are not.
  • Lynn is available immediately as an ordinary everyday form.
  • The construction is honest and easy to explain, which is more than most names of this vintage manage.
What to consider
  • It will be written as Earline, Erlene or Arlene by people taking it down from speech.
  • The connection to the title is invisible in this spelling and has to be told.
  • It is firmly of its decades and has had no revival at all.
