Where it comes from

The story of Ericca

Eiríkr was one of the great names of the Viking world, and its most famous bearer in English history was Eric Bloodaxe, a son of the Norwegian king Harald Fairhair, who ruled York twice and was driven out for the last time in the middle of the tenth century. He was killed at Stainmore, and no Scandinavian king ruled York after him. The feminine Erica came into English use much later. Ericca doubles its c in the manner of Rebecca, whose cc goes back to the double kappa of the Greek Bible.

Meaning

Fashion outlook

Ericca sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds exactly like a familiar name with a clear meaning.
  • It shares its history with a real Viking king of York.
  • Rica and Ricki are ready short forms.
What to consider
  • Nearly everyone will write Erica, and the second c will need spelling out for life.
  • The doubled c may be read as a typo on forms and quietly corrected by others.
