A briar pipe is not made of briar. It is made from the root burl of a tree heather that grows around the Mediterranean, and the English word is a mangling of the French name for that plant — which is the same word as this name.

Where it comes from

The story of Erica

The pipe wood comes from the root of a heather that grows to the size of a small tree in Corsica, Italy and North Africa; the burl at the base is dense, heat-resistant and does not crack, which makes it the best material anybody has found for the purpose. French calls the plant bruyere. English pipe-makers importing it heard the word, could not manage it, and produced briar — which was already an English word for a thorn bush and has nothing to do with heather. So a briar pipe is a heather pipe with a mispronounced label, and the name of the plant is a woman's name in half of Europe.

Meaningscholars disagree

ever-ruler

As a name Erica is the feminine of Eric, a Norse name generally read as ever-ruler or sole ruler, though the first element has also been read as honor and the case is not closed. The plant is a separate matter: the Latin name of the heather genus is the same word by coincidence, taken from a Greek word for the shrub, and it has nothing to do with the Norse name at all.

How the name formed

  1. a Norse name meaning ever-ruler gives Eric
  2. a Greek word for heather gives the plant its Latin name
  3. the two arrive at the same letters independently
  4. pipe-makers turn the French for heather into briar
  5. an American peak in the middle 1980s

Erica sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 68 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Erica sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works without alteration in English, German, Italian and Scandinavian.
  • It has both a Norse name and a plant behind it, and a child can take either.
  • The sound is completely familiar and needs no explanation anywhere.
What to consider
  • Erika with a k is common in Europe and will be substituted regularly.
  • It is closely dated to the 1980s in America and reads as a mother's name.
  • The two possible meanings are unrelated and only one of them is the name's.
