The story of Erendira
The Purépecha built a state in Michoacán that ran its own metallurgy, its own language and its own army, and when an Aztec force came west it was beaten badly enough that the border stayed where it was. What ended them was the Spanish, and Eréndira belongs to that moment: a princess who refuses the invaders, learns to ride a captured horse, and fights on. The part that is usually left out is where the story comes from. It was set down in the late nineteenth century by a Michoacán writer collecting the traditions and legends of his state, some three hundred years after the events it describes, and no colonial chronicle mentions her. That does not make it worthless. It makes it a legend with a known author and a known date, which is a rarer and more honest thing than a legend with neither.

the one who smiles
The reading usually given is the one who smiles, from the Purépecha. Purépecha is a language isolate with no proven relatives anywhere, which makes its words harder to check against neighbors than almost any other language in the Americas, and the reading rests on a narrower base than most.

Fashion outlook
Erendira sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It comes from a specific place and a specific people, and a child can go and read about both.
- The sounds are all available in English and in Spanish, so it survives the crossing intact.
- It is genuinely rare in the United States without being unpronounceable, which is an unusual combination.
- Four syllables and an accent that American paperwork will drop; the name will be shortened by other people before it is shortened by you.
- The story behind it is a nineteenth-century retelling rather than a chronicle, so anyone who looks it up will find the same uncertainty you did.
- Outside Mexican-American communities it will be unfamiliar, and unfamiliar names get spelled by ear.
