Aeolus gives Odysseus a leather bag with all the contrary winds tied up inside it and lets the west wind blow him home. They sail for nine days and Ithaca comes into sight, close enough to see people on the shore. Odysseus, who has not slept, falls asleep. The crew, convinced the bag is full of treasure he is not sharing, open it. Every wind comes out at once and they are blown all the way back to where they started. Aeolus refuses to help again, on the grounds that a man this obviously hated by the gods is not worth assisting. It is the point in the poem where the homecoming stops being a matter of distance.
