The story of Enos
In Genesis, Enosh is the son of Seth and grandson of Adam, and the text places the first calling on the name of the Lord in his time. Greek translators wrote him Enos and the King James Bible kept that form, which is why English-speaking countries use it while Hebrew keeps Enosh. It was well used by American families in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly in New England, and it appears in the records without a break, if quietly, ever since.

The trade-off
- A documented biblical name with a settled meaning and a very long record.
- Two syllables and four letters, easy to write early.
- It has real American history, especially in New England, rather than being a modern revival with no roots here.
- The sound is close enough to a hard English word to be noticed by other children, and the spelling does not protect him from it.
- It reads as distinctly old-fashioned, which is a strength or a cost depending on the family.
- Enosh, Enoch and Enos get confused, and the last two are different biblical people.
