Our story of Enola
Ours, offered as ours. Reversed names were a real American nineteenth-century habit — Nevaeh is the famous modern instance, but Adnil, Senna and Enola all appear in the older records, and families clearly enjoyed the trick. Enola is the most successful of them, and it has a further advantage: unlike most reversals it sounds like an ordinary name rather than a puzzle. Someone looking at it cold would never guess. That is a genuinely good piece of design, whoever did it first.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source is documented. The reversal of the English word alone is the most-cited account and appears in a nineteenth-century novel that used the name for exactly that reason, but the name is in American records before and beyond that. Claims of a Native American origin are frequently made and not supported.

The trade-off
- Nola sits inside it as a complete name with its own history.
- Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.
- Genuine nineteenth-century American use, so it is a revival rather than an invention.
- The aircraft that carried the first atomic bomb was named for its pilot's mother, who bore this name, and that association is unavoidable.
- The reversal will be pointed out to her repeatedly.
- There is no documented meaning, and the Native American claims are not supported.
