Where it comes from

The story of Eneida

The poem it names is strange at its center. Its hero is not given a choice about anything: he is told what he must do, does it, loses almost everybody he cares about in the process, and the text keeps returning to how little he wants any of it. He leaves a city he loves because he is ordered to; he abandons a woman who then kills herself; he arrives in Italy and fights a war he describes as unwanted, and the poem ends abruptly with an act of rage rather than a settlement. Rome read it as a national epic for four centuries. It is at least as easy to read as an argument about the cost of one.

Meaning

The poem of Aeneas

The word is the Spanish and Portuguese title of Virgil's epic, formed from the hero's name. As a woman's name it is the title used directly, which is an unusual thing to do and not unusual at all in Spanish, where abstractions and titles are given as names freely.

Eneida sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1966, with 29 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Eneida sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a real literary name rather than an invented sound.
  • It is understood across the Spanish-speaking world.
  • The rhythm is balanced and nothing in it is hard to say.
What to consider
  • English speakers will not recognize the title and will hear Aneda or Elena.
  • It is a book title rather than a character's name, which some people find odd.
  • The spelling will be checked every time in English-speaking settings.
