Enedelia is one of a large group of Spanish-language names that appear in Mexican and Mexican-American records without any saint, word or earlier form behind them. Making names is not an American habit; it is a human one, and Mexico has had to legislate about it.

Where it comes from

Our story of Enedelia

In twenty fourteen the civil registry of the Mexican state of Sonora published a list of names it would no longer accept, having found all of them on actual birth certificates. It included Facebook, Rambo, Terminator, Circuncisión, Hitler, Usnavy, Rocky, Lady Di, Batman and about fifty others, and the stated reason was that a child should not be exposed to ridicule. Other states followed with their own lists. The registrars' argument is a real one — a name goes on every document a person will ever hold — and the counter-argument is equally real, since every name was invented by somebody and the only difference is how long ago. Spanish-speaking America has been making names for centuries: taking them from calendars, from telenovelas, from syllables that sound right, and occasionally from the badge on a passing ship.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is documented. It resembles several Latin and Greek elements without descending from any of them, and the pattern — three or four open syllables, a familiar-looking ending — matches a large family of twentieth-century Mexican builds. No saint of the name exists.

Pronouncing Enedelia

eh-neh-DEL-yah

Four syllables with the stress on the third. The final i and a run together into one syllable in Spanish, which English speakers usually separate.

Fashion outlook

Enedelia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every syllable is open, which makes it easy to say in Spanish or English.
  • Four syllables give it a formal length and two quite different short forms.
  • The spelling is phonetic in Spanish and needs no explanation there.
What to consider
  • Enedelia, Enedelina and Nedelia are all recorded and the spelling will need giving.
  • English speakers will add a syllable at the end.
  • There is no documented origin, so the meaning question has no honest answer.
