The story of Endia
Names taken straight from countries are a small and recognizable class in American naming: India, Asia, China, Kenya, America and a handful of others, used as given names with no family connection to the place implied. India is the oldest of them in English, in use since the eighteenth century and strongest in the American South, where it was a settled woman's name long before it was a fashion. Endia is a respelling of it, and it belongs to a habit rather than to a country: the first syllable of India is unstressed, and an unstressed vowel in English can be written with any letter at all, so an e is as accurate as an i and looks different on the page, which is the entire point.
Meaning
River, by way of a country
Sanskrit sindhu means a river, and it was the name of the great river that Greek and Persian speakers met first when they came east. Persian turned the s into an h, giving Hind, and Greek dropped it altogether, giving Indos and then India. So the country is named for the river, the river is named river, and the words Hindu, Hindi and India are all the same word arriving by different roads.

Pronouncing Endia
EN-dee-uh
Three syllables with the stress at the front. Read as a respelling of India it is IN-dee-uh, and both are heard; the difference lies in a vowel that carries no weight, which is why the two spellings can trade places without anyone noticing.

Fashion outlook
Endia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar and needs no explanation anywhere in the English-speaking world.
- Indie and Dia are two current, distinct short forms that sound nothing like each other.
- The name has a real and interesting history behind it that a child can look up and check.
- India is the standard spelling and will be written instead of this one by nearly everybody.
- A country name carries assumptions about a family's connection to it, and those come up in conversation.
- The respelled first syllable changes nothing audible, so the difference has to be defended in writing rather than in speech.
