The story of Emilyann
The Aemilii were among the oldest noble families of Rome, and their name is still written into the city. The Basilica Aemilia, the great hall they built and rebuilt beside the Forum, burned when the Visigoths sacked Rome, and the fire melted the bronze coins of the money-changers into its marble floor, where the green stains can still be seen. Aemilia became Emilia in Italian and Emily in English, and Americans later joined it to Ann, as Mary and Ann became Maryann, to make a single given name.

Emily and Ann joined: a Roman family name and grace
Ann is settled: it comes from Hebrew Hannah, grace or favor. Emily is not. It descends from Aemilia, the feminine of the Roman family name Aemilius, which ancient writers linked to aemulus, rival, a connection modern scholars do not treat as proven. The spelling keeps the y of Emily, as English does when two words are joined rather than a suffix added: merry becomes merriment, but body stays whole in bodyguard.
