Emalie
Feminine · “Rival”
There is a region of Italy named after a road, and the road is named after a family whose name is the one behind Emily. Emilia-Romagna runs along the line of a Roman highway built by a consul of the Aemilian clan, and the province, the cheese, the vinegar and the name all come back to it.

The story of Emalie
Roman roads named the country they crossed. The Via Aemilia was built in the second century before Christ, ran arrow-straight from Rimini to Piacenza across the plain, and organized everything around it: the towns along it are still spaced at the intervals the surveyors chose, the modern motorway follows it, and the whole region took its name from it and keeps it. Nobody outside Italy thinks of Emilia-Romagna as being named after a person, and it is: a consul who ordered a road and got a province. The family name behind him then went, by a completely separate route through Latin and French, into the English stock of women's names.

Rival, by tradition
Aemilius was a Roman clan name and its meaning was already lost in antiquity; the connection to a word about rivalry is a guess made much later. Amelia is a different name, Germanic and unrelated, and the two have been confused in English for centuries. This spelling belongs to the Latin one.

Fashion outlook
Emalie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely established across four European languages.
- Em and Emmie are two short forms that are both entirely current.
- The name has a documented Roman line and a region of Italy attached to it.
- Emily and Emilie are both far commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
- It will be confused with Amelia, which is a different name from a different language.
- The middle vowel is inaudible, so the spelling cannot be defended in speech.
Nobody names a baby alone.
