Elvie belongs to the nineteenth century, when short affectionate forms were written on certificates as though they were full names and given to sons and daughters alike. The element at the front of it is one of the oldest in the Germanic name stock, and it has left a stranger mark on ordinary English than most people expect.

How old is the name Elvie?

Elvie first appears in US birth records in 1890 — 135 years ago. The typical Elvie alive today was born around 1930, making them about 95 years old. About 200 people named Elvie are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Elvie most popular?

Elvie peaked in 1903, reaching #783 nationally. See the whole 1903 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Elvie

The Germanic elf was not the small polite creature of later storybooks, and the words it left behind show it. English once had a noun auf, later ouphe, taken from the Norse word for an elf, and what it meant was a changeling: the child that elves were believed to have swapped for a human one. A family with a baby who did not thrive, or who behaved in ways they could not explain, had a ready framework for it. The word survived the belief. Auf was respelled oaf, the changeling sense dropped away, and what remained was the modern insult for someone clumsy and slow. Elvie sits at the pleasant end of the same word family, several centuries and several softenings later.

Not established

This is a familiar form without a documented parent. Elvira, Elva, Alvina and Elvina are all candidates, and some families almost certainly built it straight from the sound. The elf element behind several of those names is genuine, but it cannot be claimed for this spelling specifically.

Two syllables, stress at the front. The ie at the end is a long e, as it is in Annie and Millie, and not the long i of pie.

Elvie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 23 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Elvie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two short syllables are easy for a small child to say about themselves.
  • The spelling is unambiguous by English rules.
  • It reads as a full name and as an affectionate form at the same time.
What to consider
  • It is closely tied to a particular era and reads as inherited from a great-grandmother.
  • Elvis is close enough that the association arrives whether or not it is wanted.
  • The record holds it for sons too, though hardly ever now, so a boy carrying it will be an exception twice over.
