Elvera
Feminine
Elvira came into Spanish with the Visigoths. The Germanic kingdom that ruled Spain before the Arab conquest left a layer of names underneath the Latin ones — Elvira, Alvaro, Rodrigo, Fernando — and they are still among the most Spanish-sounding names there are, which is a good illustration of how thoroughly a borrowing can naturalize.

The story of Elvera
Elvira is also a district of Granada and was the name of a substantial medieval city there, which gave the name a second and separate presence in Spain. It reached wider European attention through Mozart: Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni is the woman the title character has already abandoned, and she spends the opera pursuing him with a mixture of fury and unwilling attachment that the music takes entirely seriously. The e in this American spelling records the unstressed first vowel, which is the same sound whether written a, e or i.

Not established
The Visigothic original is variously reconstructed as Gelovira or Alwara, and the elements proposed include words for spear, for truth and for a guardian. None of the readings commands agreement, and the name may have been reshaped in Spanish beyond recovery. What is documented is the layer it belongs to: Germanic names that entered Spanish through Visigothic rule and stayed after the kingdom fell.

Fashion outlook
Elvera sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Vera is available inside it as a complete name with a documented meaning.
- The Visigothic layer it belongs to is a genuinely interesting piece of Spanish history.
- Three syllables with a clear middle stress, which balances a short surname.
- Elvira is the standard spelling and this will be rewritten as it on most documents.
- In America the name carries a strong association with a television horror host, which is fixed.
- The origin is genuinely unrecovered, so no meaning is available to hand over.
