The story of Elois
Heloise was one of the most learned women in Europe, ran a convent for decades and argued with her former teacher about theology and about what had happened to them, in Latin, at length. The letters were copied and read continuously afterwards, translated into every European language, and made the name a byword. English took it as Eloise, and American families produced Elois by dropping the final e — which removes the French and leaves a name that sits very close to Lois without being related to it at all.
