Where it comes from

The story of Elnor

When a queen of England died in the Midlands, her body was carried to Westminster over twelve days, and her husband had a stone cross erected at every place it rested overnight — twelve of them, elaborate and expensive, marking the stages of a funeral procession across the country. Three survive. The last stood at the top of Whitehall, and the spot is still called by a worn-down version of its name, which is why the center of London is measured from a place named after the final stop of a thirteenth-century funeral.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Eleanor came into English from Provençal and its origin has never been settled; it is not, despite constant repetition, a form of Helen. The dropped vowels in this spelling change nothing about the uncertainty.

Elnor sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Elnor sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short and read correctly on sight.
  • The name behind it is one of the great European ones.
  • It carries short forms that are complete names themselves.
What to consider
  • Eleanor is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it.
  • The dropped vowels make the name look clipped rather than chosen.
  • The meaning has never been established, whatever the name books say.
