Where it comes from

The story of Elizabethann

Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York in 1774, married the merchant William Seton, and was left a widow with five children when he died in Italy in 1803. She became a Catholic, moved to Emmitsburg, Maryland, and in 1809 founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's, opening a school for girls there. In 1975 she was declared a saint. Written as one word, her two names come within a letter of the adjective Elizabethan, of the age of Elizabeth I, though the adjective moves the stress and says the middle as BEE.

Meaning

my God is an oath, and grace

Elizabeth comes from Hebrew Elisheba, my God is an oath; Ann from Hannah, grace or favor. The compound keeps both.

Fashion outlook

Elizabethann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are long-established English names with settled meanings.
  • Offers a choice of everyday short forms, from Liz and Beth to Libby.
  • Has a documented American bearer of the two-word form in Elizabeth Ann Seton.
What to consider
  • As one long word it will be broken up on forms, and people will ask whether it is Elizabeth Ann, Elizabeth-Ann or Elizabethann.
  • At twelve letters it is long to write in the first school years, and a short form usually takes over day to day.
