The story of Eliyah
Elijah appears in the books of Kings challenging the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, being fed by ravens, hearing God not in the wind or the earthquake but in a small still voice, and finally leaving in a chariot of fire rather than dying. Jewish tradition keeps a cup for him at Passover. The name went into Greek as Elias and into English as Elijah, and Eliyah is closer to the Hebrew than either. Its use for daughters is recent and American, and it comes from the sound rather than the source.
Meaning
my God is the Lord
Hebrew Eliyahu joins Eli, 'my God', to Yahu, the divine name — so the name asserts that the God of Israel is the speaker's own. The reading is documented and undisputed, and it is unusually pointed: Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal is precisely an argument about which god is God, and his name has been making the claim all along.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Eliyah went to 57 girls in 2025, but Elia, Ellia and Eliya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 8 spellings went to 466, which makes it the 539th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,394 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,449 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 28,198 for Eliyah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Teah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eliyah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Teah climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Teah's path sketches the road Eliyah is walking now.
Eliyah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented biblical name with an unusually pointed and interesting meaning.
- Eli and Lia are both ready short forms and both are established names.
- Closer to the Hebrew than the standard English form, which is often the point of choosing it.
- In the Bible and in Hebrew it is a man's name, and a daughter will be read as a son on paper.
- Eliyah, Elijah, Eliyahu and Elia all circulate and look quite different from each other.
- It is an unmistakably scriptural name and will be read as a statement.
