Teah
Feminine · “goddess”
Teah adds an h to a name that is already three letters, which is a high ratio of decoration to name. The word underneath is Greek for a goddess, and it is also, until botanists reclassified the plant, the scientific name of tea: the shrub was called Thea for a century and a half before being moved into the camellia genus.

From A Greek word for a goddess to Teah
Our story of Teah
The tea plant had two names and the argument took two centuries. Linnaeus classified it under a genus he called Thea, from the word the Dutch had brought back along with the leaves; other botanists put it in the camellia genus, named after a Jesuit who collected plants in Asia; and the two classifications ran side by side, with the same shrub carrying two scientific names, until the twentieth century settled it in favor of camellia. So every cup of tea in the world comes from a plant that was officially called Thea for about a hundred and fifty years and is now called something else. The name on this certificate has nothing to do with any of that, and the coincidence is a good one.

goddess
If the name is a form of Thea, the Greek word means a goddess and the reading is settled for that name. If it is a clipping of a longer name ending the same way, of which there are many, the answer depends on which one. The added h is inaudible and contributes nothing; it is one of the commonest American respelling devices.
How the name formed
- A Greek word for a goddess
- Thea as a name and, separately, as a botanical genus
- The tea plant moved into the camellia genus
- Teah as an American respelling with an added h

TEE-uh
Two syllables, stress on the first. Some families say TAY-uh instead, with the vowel of day, and the spelling supports both, so it is worth establishing which at an introduction.

Fashion outlook
Teah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, soft and easy for speakers of almost any language.
- The Greek meaning is short and pleasant and can be given in a word.
- It is genuinely uncommon while being entirely unproblematic to say.
- The first vowel is genuinely unsettled and strangers will guess.
- The added h is inaudible and adds a letter to every form.
- It will be written Tea, Thea or Tia by people taking it from speech.
