Eliel
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “my God is God”
Eliel is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,922 boys against 9 girls since 1880.
Eliel is one of the quieter names in the Hebrew Bible — it turns up in the Chronicles lists of David's warriors and Levite families, doubling the word for God at both ends. It travels almost unchanged through Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and Finnish, and the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen carried it into the twentieth century. Said aloud it rises to the last syllable, which gives it a lift that plainer Bible names don't have.
How old is the name Eliel?
Eliel first appears in US birth records in 1975 — 50 years ago. The typical Eliel is a kid of about 6 — this name's wave is very recent. About 4,900 people named Eliel are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Eliel
Eliel is Hebrew, and its home in the written record is the book of Chronicles, where it belongs to several different men — a chief of a family east of the Jordan, warriors in David's ranks, a Levite who helped carry the ark, an overseer of temple offerings. Unlike Daniel or Samuel, it never became a mainstream Christian name in Europe, so for centuries it stayed a name for readers of the text rather than a name for children. Finland took it up as a given name, and Latin American Protestant and Evangelical families have used it steadily; it reaches US records largely along that Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking road, which is why it shows most strongly in Texas, California and New York. It is a rising name here, and a young one — most of the Eliels in the country are still children.
Meaning
my God is God
Built from the Hebrew element El, "God", used twice: eli ("my God") plus El. Some translators render it "God is God" or "God of God" — the same components, differently arranged in English.

The Beryl test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eliel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Beryl climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Beryl's path sketches the road Eliel is walking now.
Eliel is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Same spelling in Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and Finnish — it crosses those languages without adjustment.
- A documented biblical name, appearing repeatedly in the books of Chronicles, so it has a long written record behind a recent wave.
- Comes with Eli ready-made as a short form, a name that already stands on its own.
- Five letters, no silent parts, and phonetic once the listener knows where the stress falls.
- It sits close to Eli, Elias, Elian and Ariel, so expect people to mishear it and to reach for one of those instead. Repeating it once usually settles the matter.
- The stress moves between languages — final-syllable in Spanish and Hebrew, first-syllable in Finnish and often in English. A bilingual family may hear the name said two ways.
- A child with this name will likely be the only one in the class, which some kids enjoy and others find tiring on the first day of every school year. The name is climbing, so that solitude may soften over time.
