Eliam
Masculine · “God of the people”
Eliam is a name lifted straight out of the Hebrew books of Samuel, where it belongs to a warrior in King David's guard and to the father of Bathsheba. It is built from two of the oldest pieces in Semitic naming — El, God, and am, kin or people — and it ends on that open vowel that lets it be said softly or called across a yard. In English it hands over Eli without any effort at all.
How old is the name Eliam?
Eliam first appears in US birth records in 2000 — 25 years ago. Eliam is overwhelmingly a brand-new baby name right now — most Eliams are still in diapers. About 4,400 people named Eliam are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Eliam
Eliam is a biblical Hebrew name, אֱלִיעָם, and it appears twice in the second book of Samuel: once as Eliam son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, listed among David's thirty warriors, and once as the father of Bathsheba. Jewish tradition reads those as one man, which would make Ahithophel Bathsheba's grandfather. In the parallel genealogy in Chronicles her father is called Ammiel instead — the very same two elements, God and kin, simply flipped in order, which is a thing Hebrew names do. The name passed into Latin and English Bibles unaltered, sat quietly there for centuries, and has been picked up as a given name in the United States only in recent decades, with particular strength in Texas, California and New York.
Meaningscholars disagree
God of the people, or my God is kinsman
Both halves are agreed: El, God, and am. The argument is over am. Read as "people", the name means "God of the people"; read in the older sense of "paternal kin, clan", it means something closer to "my God is kinsman". Both readings are standard in Hebrew scholarship, and neither has pushed the other out.

Pronouncing Eliam
ee-LEE-am
Three syllables in English, with the stress in the middle; EL-ee-am is also heard. The Hebrew original stresses the last syllable, eh-lee-AHM, and Spanish speakers tend toward eh-LYAHM. All are in real use, so it is worth deciding which one your family will say.

The Stephan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eliam's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stephan climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stephan's path sketches the road Eliam is walking now.

The trade-off
- Comes with Eli already attached — a short form people know how to spell and say without being told.
- A documented biblical name, so it has a fixed spelling and a traceable record going back to the Hebrew scriptures.
- Works in English and Spanish alike without changing spelling, which matters in the states where it is used most.
- Familiar in sound because of Elijah, Elias and Eli, while remaining rare as a full name.
- The stress genuinely varies — ee-LEE-am, EL-ee-am, eh-lee-AHM — and you will be correcting people fairly often, or letting all three coexist.
- It is close enough to Elias, Elian and Eliab that mishearings and misspellings are likely, especially over the phone.
- Eli is the short form, and Eli is shared with a great many Elijahs and Eliases; the nickname will be common even where the full name is not.
- It is climbing quickly rather than sitting still, so the name that feels unusual now may feel considerably more familiar by the time your child is in middle school.
