Our story of Elgie
The word Elgie most resembles is elegy, and elegy is a word that changed jobs. In Greek it named a meter, not a mood: the elegiac couplet, a long line followed by a shorter one, and Greek poets used it for absolutely anything. Love poems were elegies. Political advice was an elegy. Drinking songs and battlefield exhortations were elegies. Only later, as the form was used more and more for laments, did the word slide across from describing the shape of the verse to describing the feeling in it, until an elegy came to mean a poem of mourning and nothing else. Elgie does not descend from that word. But a name whose origin is unrecoverable can be allowed the company of one, and this is good company: a word that started as a measurement and became an emotion.

Three roads are possible. It may be Elijah worn down in speech and written as heard, it may be the Scottish surname built on the town of Elgin, or it may be a name built to the pattern of the period from an initial and an ending. The record supports all three and settles none.

Fashion outlook
Elgie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, two syllables, and read correctly by most people on sight.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls across its whole run, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
- It belongs to a real and datable stretch of American naming, which gives it a place in time even without an etymology.
- It leans to boys, but a real share of children with this spelling are girls, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
- It is close enough to Elsie and Algie to be misheard as either, and misheard names get written down wrong.
- No origin is documented, so there is nothing to answer with when the meaning question comes up.
