The story of Elfreda
The elf in it meant something quite unlike what it means now. In Old English an ælf was a real and dangerous being: elf-shot was a diagnosis, the explanation for a sudden pain in a man or a cow that had no visible cause, and the medical books of the period carry charms against it. Naming a child for elf strength was not whimsy; it was asking for the power of something that frightened people. The delicate, wing-bearing elf is a Victorian invention laid on top. So a name that now sounds like a fairy tale originally meant almost the opposite, and the child who carries it is carrying a very old idea about where strength comes from.

Elf strength
The Old English name is Ælfthryth: ælf, elf, and thryth, strength or power. The modern spelling looks as though its second half were frith, peace, which belongs to a different set of names — Winifred, Alfred's relatives, the Frederick family. Centuries of respelling blurred the two, so the name a child is given today looks like elf peace and descends from elf strength.

Fashion outlook
Elfreda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

- Elfrida, Elfreda and Alfreda are all close enough to be mixed up in writing.
- The name is strongly associated with a particular Victorian revival, which gives it a period flavor.
