There is a one-page letter in the New Testament addressed to the elect lady and her children, and scholars have argued for centuries about whether that means a woman or a congregation. Either way, the Latin word for chosen became a woman's name, and in America it acquired a second life in a fraternal order.

How old is the name Electa?

Electa was already in use when US birth records began in 1880 — it is at least 145 years old. The typical Electa alive today was born around 1920, making them about 105 years old. About 300 people named Electa are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Electa most popular?

Where it comes from

The story of Electa

The second letter of John opens by addressing the elect lady, which in Greek could be a title, a name, or a way of speaking about a church as though it were a woman, since congregations are grammatically feminine and are described that way elsewhere. Commentators have gone every direction with it. The name then had a curious American career: it is one of the five women whose stories form the degrees of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Masonic organization open to women, where each heroine stands for a virtue and Electa stands for charity. Members were given the names as points of a star, and the order was large enough in the nineteenth century to put all five into circulation as given names.

Meaning

Chosen

Latin electa, the feminine of the past participle of eligere, to pick out. English gets elect, election and eligible from the same verb. As a name it belongs to the class of Protestant abstractions, chosen for what the word says rather than for any bearer, and it says something about the family's theology.

Pronouncing Electa

ee-LEK-tuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The first vowel is reduced in ordinary speech, which is why the name is also written Elekta and Alecta in older records.

Electa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Electa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a single clear word and can be given to a child at once.
  • Ellie is a fully current short form available immediately.
  • It has a documented American history through a large organization.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Electra, which is a different name with a very different story attached.
  • The meaning is theological and specific, and not every family will want that stated.
  • It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
