Eleanora
Feminine · “Not settled”
Eleanora is the long, Latinate stretch of a name that has been in the West since the twelfth century, when Aliénor of Aquitaine carried it from Occitan-speaking Poitou to the thrones of France and then England. The extra syllable is the Italian and Polish habit — Eleonora — grafted onto the English Eleanor, and it gives the name five beats that resolve on a soft, open ending. Every one of its short forms, Nora, Ella, Nell, has had a life of its own.

The story of Eleanora
The name begins in the Occitan-speaking south of France as Alienòr, and it becomes internationally known through the duchess of Aquitaine who bore it in the twelfth century and became first queen of France, then queen of England. English speakers shortened and reshaped it into Eleanor; Italian, Polish and German speakers kept a fuller shape, Eleonora and Eleonore, and Spanish and Portuguese trimmed it from the front into Leonor. Eleanora is the English spelling of that fuller continental form, the -a ending giving it the same rhythm as Eleonora while keeping the familiar English 'Elean-'. It arrived in the United States on both roads at once, from British Eleanor and from Italian, German and Central European immigration.

Not settled; the name is a medieval Occitan one whose original sense is disputed
Two serious readings compete. One traces it to Old Occitan/Old French elements of uncertain sense, recorded from the twelfth century as Alienòr and Aliénor. The other is the medieval explanation that the first famous bearer was named for her mother Aenor — 'the other Aenor' — which is documented as a story told at the time rather than as linguistic proof. The popular gloss 'light' comes from later confusion with Helen, a separate Greek name, and is not an etymology of Eleanora.

The trade-off
- Comes with a full set of ready-made short forms — Nora, Ella, Ellie, Nell — each already familiar on its own.
- The 'Elean-' opening is spelling people recognize instantly from Eleanor, so the name is never opaque even when it has to be repeated.
- A documented line running back to twelfth-century Occitan, unbroken through French, English, Italian and Polish use.
- Has close counterparts in Italian, German, Polish, Spanish and Russian, so it survives a move or a bilingual family.
- It will be misspelled. Eleonora, Elenora, Eleanor and Elinor all compete for the same sound, and she will spend a lifetime spelling it out — usually cheerfully, but always.
- Five syllables invite shortening, and the short forms are far more common than the full name. In practice she may be Nora or Ella to most people, with Eleanora kept for documents and introductions.
- Because Eleanor is much better known, some people will simply hear and write that instead, dropping the final -a without noticing.
