Eldridge
Masculine · “Old English eald and ric”

The story of Eldridge
The Old English word eald did a job that modern old does not. An ealdorman was the king's man over a shire, an office that ranked just below the king himself before the Danish title earl replaced it, and the word survives as alderman on English and American councils. The related elder names a church office in most Protestant traditions, and the Latin senator is built from the same idea, from senex, an old man. Age meant standing, and Old English naming used the element accordingly: Ealdred, old counsel, Ealdwine, old friend, Ealdric, old ruler. The surnames Eldridge, Aldrich, Eldred and Alderson all descend from those names, and the association with mere age arrived only after the social arrangement behind it had gone.
