Where it comes from

The story of Eldora

El Dorado was not a place to begin with. He was a man: the chief of a people near Bogota who, according to the Spanish accounts, was coated in gold dust and rowed out onto a lake as an offering. The Spanish called him el dorado, the gilded one, and over the following century the phrase slid from the man to his supposed city to a whole imaginary kingdom, and killed a great many people who went looking for it. Eldora is that phrase in a woman's shape. It appears in American records from the beginning of the count, alongside Eldon, Elnora and Eldoris, and there are towns called Eldora in Iowa and Colorado, both named in the mining century.

the gilded one

If the name is Spanish, it is from dorar, to gild, the same root as El Dorado. If it is American-built, it is El and Dora joined, and Dora is itself cut from Dorothea, a gift of God. Nothing in the record settles which a given family intended.

Eldora sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 154 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Eldora sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every syllable is familiar, so the name is read correctly at first sight.
  • It carries two very different short forms, Dora and Ellie, so the same person can go by either.
  • The gold behind it is a settled, cheerful image, and the story attached to it is real history rather than invention.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Eldora, Aldora and Elnora by turns, and spelled all three ways.
  • The name is of the nineteenth century and reads as belonging to it.
  • The El Dorado story is a story about greed as much as about gold, which some families will want and others will not.
