The story of Ekam
Ik Onkar — one, and that one is the creator — is the opening of the Mool Mantar and the first thing in Sikh scripture, and the numeral is written as the figure 1 rather than spelled out. Naming a child Ekam therefore reaches directly for that. The name is used in Punjabi Sikh families and is given to boys and girls alike, which suits a word that is a number rather than a description.
Meaning
one
From Sanskrit eka, one, in its neuter form; the Punjabi ik in Ik Onkar is the same word, and the phrase opens the Guru Granth Sahib and is the fundamental statement of Sikh belief.

The Venancio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ekam's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Venancio climbed just as high around 1943, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Venancio's path sketches the road Ekam is walking now.
Ekam sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning tied directly to the opening line of a scripture.
- Four letters and two syllables, easy to write and to say.
- It works for a boy or a girl, which is useful before a birth.
- It is very clearly marked as a Sikh name, which is the intention in the families that use it.
- Being used for both sexes means forms may guess wrong.
- Outside Punjabi-speaking communities the reference needs explaining.
