Where it comes from

The story of Eino

Finland had been ruled from Sweden for centuries, and Swedish surnames sat on families who spoke no Swedish. In the first decade of the twentieth century a national movement set a single day for changing that, timed to the centenary of a writer who had argued for the Finnish language, and on that one day something in the order of a hundred thousand people took Finnish surnames. Whole villages changed together. At almost exactly the same time, Finns were leaving for America in large numbers, and they went where the work was: the copper country of upper Michigan, the iron ranges of Minnesota, the timber of the northwest. They built halls, cooperatives and saunas, and they brought names like Eino with them, which is why this one appears in American records at all.

Not established

Eino has been connected to older Scandinavian names and to Finnish words, and none of the proposals has settled the question. It is best treated as a Finnish name whose own history is short and undocumented.

Pronouncing Eino

AY-noh

Two syllables, stress firmly on the first. The ei is the ay of day followed by a short ee, said quickly, and the o is pure rather than sliding.

Eino sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1915, with 74 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Eino sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, two syllables, and nothing in it that an English mouth cannot manage.
  • It carries a real and well-documented national history rather than a guessed-at etymology.
  • It is genuinely rare in the United States while being entirely ordinary somewhere, which is the most comfortable kind of rare.
What to consider
  • American readers will say EE-noh on sight, so the correction gets made early and often.
  • Outside Finnish-American communities it will be unfamiliar, and unfamiliar short names get misheard as other short names.
  • Nothing is documented about its own origin, so the meaning question has no answer.
