Earnie spells Ernie with the ea of the English word earnest, and the joke is that the two earnests in English are different words. The one meaning serious is Old English; the one in earnest money, a deposit that binds a bargain, came from Hebrew through Greek and Latin and has nothing to do with it.

Where it comes from

The story of Earnie

The commercial word came a long way. Hebrew erabon, a pledge given to secure an agreement, went into Greek as arrabon, into Latin, into Old French as erres, and into English as ernes, which was then reshaped by association with the adjective earnest and acquired a t. It survives in earnest money, the deposit that makes a contract binding, and in the older phrase about a token given in earnest of what is to come. So English has two words spelled the same way, one about being serious and one about paying up front, and neither is related to the other. A name spelled with the ea sits on top of both.

Meaning

Serious, resolute

The full name Ernest is from a Germanic word meaning seriousness or vigor in battle, related to the English adjective earnest. That is the source, and it is secure. The deposit sense of earnest is a separate word entirely, and the spelling of this name accidentally points at both.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ea writes the neutral r-colored vowel that English also spells er, ir and ur; all four merged centuries ago and the spelling records history.

Earnie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1946, with 31 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Earnie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and impossible to mispronounce.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • A full formal name sits behind it if one is ever wanted.
What to consider
  • Ernie is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
  • The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
