Earnest
Feminine · “vigor”
Earnest is given to boys far more often — 58,389 boys against 726 girls since 1880. See Earnest as a boy name
Earnest is Ernest spelled the way the English adjective is spelled, and the two words have nothing to do with one another. The name is Germanic and carries a harder sense than the adjective does — closer to vigor and struggle than to solemnity. It is also one of the very few English names that ends in the three letters the language uses to build a superlative.

The story of Earnest
The name came into English twice. Anglo-Saxon England had a form of it and let it go; Hanoverian England took it back from German in the eighteenth century, when the royal family brought a great many German names across with them, and it spread widely in the nineteenth. The most interesting man to carry this spelling was Ernest Everett Just, a cell biologist born in Charleston, who worked on how the surface of an egg behaves at the moment of fertilisation. He was the first person given the NAACP's Spingarn Medal. No American university with a research laboratory would give him a post, so he spent years working in Naples, Berlin and Paris instead, and did some of his best work there before the war forced him home.
Meaning
vigor, earnestness, a hard struggle
From Old High German ernust, a noun meaning seriousness in the sense of a fight rather than a mood. The same word survives in modern German as Ernst. The English adjective earnest descends separately from Old English eornost, and the two arrived at the same spelling by different roads.

Fashion outlook
Earnest sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is instantly readable: no one has to be told how to say it.
- The short form Ernie is already in general use and arrives ready-made.
- The spelling looks like an English word, which makes it easy to remember after one hearing.
- Ernest is much the commoner spelling, so this one will be corrected on forms for a lifetime.
- The English adjective sits inside it, and people will assume a meaning the name does not have.
- It is recorded for daughters as well, but so rarely that a girl carrying it will be explaining it constantly.
