The story of Earma
The Germanic element irmin, 'great, universal', named the Irminsul, a sacred pillar or tree of the pagan Saxons; in 772 Charlemagne's army destroyed it at the start of his long war to conquer and convert them. Much later Erma Bombeck, a newspaper columnist in Ohio, turned the life of a suburban housewife into some of the funniest writing in America; her book The Grass Is Always Greener over the Septic Tank was a best-seller. Earma was a spelling of Erma used in the early twentieth century.
