Earleen
Feminine · “from the title earl”
Earleen writes the word earl visibly, where the other spellings of this name bury it. The title is worth a moment: for the first three centuries after the conquest an earl was the highest rank in England, outranking everything, and the whole apparatus of dukes and marquesses that now sits above it was invented later and imported from France.

The story of Earleen
The first English duke was created in thirteen thirty-seven, for the king's son, and before that there was nothing between an earl and the crown. The rank had been the top of the English hierarchy since the Norse word replaced the older English one, and an earl in the eleventh century governed an entire province with an authority that later earls never had. The proliferation of ranks above it was a later development, driven by the need to distinguish degrees of royal favor, and each new one pushed the earl further down. By the modern period it sits third of five, which is a considerable demotion for a title that started at the top and never changed its name.

from the title earl
The likeliest source is the English word for the rank, which came from a Norse word for a chieftain and was already in use before the conquest. Built into a woman's name with a French-looking ending, it describes a rank rather than translating into anything. A minority of families may have intended a shortening of a longer name, and the spelling cannot rule that out.
How the name formed
- A Norse word for a chieftain taken into Old English
- The highest rank in England for three centuries
- Earl as an American first name for boys
- Earleen and Erline built from it for daughters
Pronouncing Earleen
er-LEEN
Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ear at the front is said as a single vowel, the one in earth rather than the one in ear, which is the sort of thing English spelling declines to indicate.

Fashion outlook
Earleen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, clear and completely unambiguous once heard.
- The connection to the base word is visible, which the other spellings lose.
- Leen is available as an unusual short form that stands alone.
- It will be written Earline, Erlene or Arlene by people taking it from speech.
- The first syllable looks like the word for a body part and is not said that way.
- It is firmly of the earlier twentieth century and has had no revival.
