Where it comes from

The story of Earlean

The title survived the Conquest when almost nothing else English did: the Normans kept the word for their own counts because there was no good alternative, which is why an English earl's wife is a countess and not an earless. As a given name it appears in America in the nineteenth century, part of the same habit that produced Duke, Baron and King, and it was common enough to be built on. Earlean, Earline and Earlene are the results — a rank, then a man's name, then a woman's, in three steps and about sixty years.

Meaning

nobleman, chief

The Old English eorl meant a warrior and then a nobleman of the highest rank below the king. The ending added here is a French-styled suffix and carries no sense.

Earlean sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1941, with 84 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Earlean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both parts are familiar, so the name is read correctly at sight.
  • The rank behind it is real, documented and older than the English monarchy's Norman half.
  • It carries short forms with quite different characters.
What to consider
  • Earlene, Earline and Earlean are all in the record and will be confused.
  • The first syllable is also an English adverb, and readers will see that.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the first half of the twentieth century.
