The story of Dylen
In the fourth branch of the Mabinogion, Dylan is born to Arianrhod, baptized at once, and goes straight into the sea, where he swims as well as any fish and is never seen again until his uncle kills him by accident. That is nearly all the medieval material there is. Dylan Thomas was given the name in Swansea in 1914 when it was almost unused, and his father, an English teacher with strong Welsh commitments, chose it deliberately from the old text. Thomas became famous enough that a young musician in Minnesota named Robert Zimmerman took a version of it as a stage name around 1959, and the modern popularity of Dylan descends from that, three steps from a myth that gives the character four sentences.

Welsh dy and llanw, great tide or sea
Dylan is generally read as containing the Welsh element for sea or tide, though the derivation is not secure. In the Mabinogion, Dylan ail Don makes for the water as soon as he is named. Dylen is an American respelling; its peak is 2004.

Dylen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Imari climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Imari's path sketches the road Dylen is walking now.
