Where it comes from

The story of Dylann

The Mabinogi gives Dylan four sentences: he is born to Arianrhod, is baptized, immediately makes for the sea, and swims as well as any fish in it, and the sea does not break beneath him. He is later killed by Gofannon in a blow whose story the text does not give. The name was revived in the twentieth century, carried by Dylan Thomas, born 1914, and then by Bob Dylan, who took it in the 1960s; American use follows both. The move to girls is recent, and the doubled n is the marker; Dylann's best year on the female side is 2016.

Meaning

sea, great flow

Welsh dylan, generally read as sea or as a great tide or flow. In the fourth branch of the Mabinogi, Dylan ail Don, Dylan the second wave, takes to the water at birth and is later killed by his uncle. The doubled n of this spelling is a modern American addition marking the name as a girl's, and it carries no meaning.

Dylann sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2016, with 56 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dylann went to 16 girls in 2025, but Dylan, Dillan and Dyllan are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 370, which makes it the 614th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,224 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,344 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Dylann itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Welsh meaning and a memorable figure in the Mabinogi.
  • Dyl works as a short form and is fully unisex.
  • The doubled n marks it as a girl's name clearly.
What to consider
  • Dylan is overwhelmingly a boy's name in the United States.
  • A widely reported crime in 2015 was committed by a man of a similar name.
  • The Welsh pronunciation is quite unlike the English one.
