Dreshawn
Masculine · “God is gracious”
Dreshawn shows a clipping becoming a prefix. Dre came off Andre and Deandre as a nickname; by the 1990s it was a front element in its own right, joining to endings the way Da- and De- did. Attached to Shawn — which is Sean, which is John — it produces a name with a very old back half and a very new front. Its peak is 2003.

Our story of Dreshawn
Clippings become prefixes by a route that is easy to trace. Andre gives Dre as an everyday short form. Deandre, built from De- plus Andre, also gives Dre. Once enough people are called Dre for reasons that no longer point back to Andre, the syllable is free — and a free syllable that is short, stressed and ends in a vowel is exactly what a name-front needs to be. From there it combines: Dreshawn, Dreson, Dremar. The whole process took about twenty-five years, from the 1970s to the 1990s, and it is the same one by which -son, -ora and -ien became suffixes. English builds new word-forming material out of pieces of old words constantly, and naming is where it happens fastest, because nobody has to agree that a name is a word.

God is gracious, in the Shawn element
Shawn descends through Sean from Norman French Jehan, Latin Iohannes and Hebrew Yohanan, 'Yahweh is gracious'. That half is documented at every step. Dre is a clipping of Andre, the French form of Andrew, from Greek andreios, 'manly', from aner, 'man' — so if the front descends from that, it has a meaning too. But Dre as a free-standing prefix has lost the connection, and whether a given Dreshawn carries it cannot be shown.

The Loras test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dreshawn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Loras climbed just as high around 1940, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Loras's path sketches the road Dreshawn is walking now.
Dreshawn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
