The story of Dorrie
The best-known bearer of the sound was a man. Doris Miller — called Dorie — was a ship's cook, which was one of the few jobs the Navy then allowed Black sailors to hold, and he had never been trained on a weapon. When his battleship was hit at Pearl Harbor he carried wounded men out, then manned an anti-aircraft gun and fired it until the ammunition ran out. He was the first Black sailor awarded the Navy Cross, was sent on a war bond tour, returned to sea and was lost when his escort carrier was torpedoed two years later. A warship now carries his name, which is a rare honor for anybody below flag rank.

Three candidates with different meanings. Dorothy is a gift of God; Doris is a sea nymph and a region of Greece; Dora can be cut from either or from Theodora. The short form does not say which, and many bearers have no long form at all.
Pronouncing Dorrie
DOR-ee
Two syllables, stress at the front. Identical to Dori and Dory; the doubled r keeps the vowel before it short.

Fashion outlook
Dorrie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm on sight, as short forms are, and easy at any age.
- Three different formal names are available behind it.
- The spelling is phonetic and survives being dictated.
- Dori, Dory and Dorie are all in use and hers will be written as one of them.
- It reads as a nickname, so a long form will be assumed.
- The three possible parents have three different meanings, so none is safely hers.
