The story of Donzell
Medieval Latin had a matched pair: domicella, a young lady, and dominicellus, a young lord, both diminutives of the words for lord and lady. French took the first as damoiselle, which English borrowed as damsel, and the second as damoiseau, which English borrowed as donzel and then forgot. The female word survived because it was useful in romance and then in cliche; the male word had to compete with squire, page and bachelor, all of which named the same stage of life more precisely, and it lost. English has a good many such orphaned pairs, where one member of a symmetrical set stayed in the language and the other did not, and they are usually worth noticing, because the survivor's meaning drifts once its partner is gone.

Latin dominicellus, a young lord
Donzel is an archaic English and Italian word for a squire or young gentleman not yet knighted, from Latin dominicellus, a diminutive of dominus, a lord. The American name Donzell may descend from it or be a formation from Don with the -ell ending; the peak is 1990.

Line the two peaks up, and Jerrol's path sketches the road Donzell is walking now.
