Donnette makes a diminutive out of a title of respect. Donna is the Italian word for a lady, from the Latin for the mistress of a household; adding an ending that means small to it produces a small lady, which is either charming or a contradiction depending on how literally anybody takes it.

Where it comes from

The story of Donnette

The Italian word carried real weight before it became a first name. A prima donna was simply the leading woman in an opera company, a job description with a place in the hierarchy and a corresponding fee; the modern sense of somebody difficult came later, from the behavior of a few of them and the willingness of the press to generalize. The same word makes the title given to the Virgin in Italian, where my lady is a form of address that hardened into a name for a picture. So a common noun for a woman with authority in a house became a stage rank, a religious title and, in America, a given name with a diminutive on the end, and the last of those is the only one that makes it small.

Meaning

Little lady

Latin domina, the mistress of a house, gave Italian donna and Spanish dona, both used as titles before a name and both used as ordinary words for a woman. The ending is the French diminutive. Neither half is a name in its own language: the front is a common noun and the back is a suffix, and the combination was made in English.

Fashion outlook

Donnette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
  • Donna and Nettie are two complete names sitting inside it, from different decades.
  • Every sound is ordinary English and the name is never mispronounced twice.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Danette, Jeanette and Annette, all of which are commoner.
  • The ending places the name firmly in the middle of the last century.
  • The meaning is literally a small lady, which some adults find an odd thing to carry.
